The Athletic offers several methods to securely create an account for your subscription including authentication with New York Times, Apple, Google, and Facebook, as well as standard email and password. After creating an account, you can log in with the same credentials at theathletic.com/login or by tapping Log In on the start screen of The Athletic app.
If you’re having trouble finding your login email after signing up using one of our SSO options, please refer to the below steps to locate the email address that was supplied for your authentication:
Apple authentication (Sign in with Apple)
- If hide my Email is disabled for your Apple ID, your email address is the same as your Apple ID
- If hide my Email is enabled for your Apple ID:
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Open the Settings app, then tap [your name].
- Tap Password & Security
- Tap Apps Using Your Apple ID.
- The email Apple provided is shown as XXXX@privaterelay.appleid.com
- On your Mac
- Choose Apple menu, then click System Preferences.
- Click Apple ID, then choose Password & Security.
- Click Edit.
- The email Apple provided is shown as XXXX@privaterelay.appleid.com
- On the web
- Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
- Go to the Security section, then go to Apps & Websites using Apple ID.
- Select Manage.
- The email Apple provided is shown as XXXX@privaterelay.appleid.com
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Facebook authentication
- If Share my Email is enabled, your login email is the same as your Facebook email
- If Share my Email is disabled
- On the web go to https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications
- Click on “View and Edit” for The Athletic
- The User ID is provided on the pop over that appears. Your account email is “[User ID]@fbid.facebook.com”
Google authentication
- Login email is the same as your Google account email
Please note that if you created an account using Sign in with Apple, you will need to set up an account password at theathletic.com/settings to log in on a device with iOS 12 or older installed.
Please note that while it is not possible to create an account with Sign in with Apple in the Android app, it is possible to log into an account that was created using Sign in with Apple on a different device.
If Sign in with Apple fails for you, you will need to detach your Apple ID from The Athletic using the below steps before your can retry Sign in with Apple.
- Log into http://appleid.apple.com/
- You should be redirected to https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage
- In Security, APPS & WEBSITES USING APPLE ID, click "Manage…"
- In the modal, click The Athletic icon.
- In the modal, click Stop Using Apple ID button.
- In the confirmation box, click Stop Using Apple ID button.
- Your Apple ID should be detached and you can attempt to log in again with Sign in with Apple
Sign in with NYT
To log in to The Athletic using the Sign In with The New York Times option, complete the following steps:
- Visit The Athletic and navigate to a login screen.
- Select the option to Sign in with The New York Times. If you are already logged in to your New York Times account, we will recognize you. Select Continue with The New York Times.
Note: This button might look different depending on which browser or device you are using to access The Athletic.
- Enter the Email address associated with your New York Times All Access or Home Delivery subscription.
- Enter the Password associated with your New York Times All Access or Home Delivery subscription.
- Select Log In.
- You will be redirected back to The Athletic and should see a success screen. Based on your subscription you will have full or limited access.
- Complete account by entering First Name and Last Name
- Select Continue.
